Nagumo (& Kido Butai) had never been in a carrier v carrier battle. Yorktown (w/ Fletcher) was MVP because it wasn't their 1st dance. Fletcher was fast when he sent TF 16 out first. Yorktown launched the only coordinated US strike, which was devastating. Yorktown learned from Lexington, drained the fuel lines and survived the dive bombers and decoyed the torpedoes. Fletcher & Yorktown didn't need a study group at the war college to sort out the lessons of Coral Sea. Nagumo was a rookie and it showed.

Roosevelt new damn well the Japa were heading for Pearl. He started the fight in the Pacific by blocking the Japanese fuel convoys . Roosevelt baited and pulled out the Aircraft Carriers knowing full well that Pearl was about to be attacked. This was done on purpose to put the US into the European theater and feed the big business of making war something Roosevelt loved more than life itself. Roosevelt hoodwinked the Country along with the Japs.FDR was the most evil President who ever held the office.

No shit…. The Yanks leveraged all the assets it maintained and ascendency on vs Japan and rode that bounty of natural gifts into a position of unmitigated dominance in the Pacific theatre very sharply. The history channel love to purport it was some ‘close run’ toss of the coin sort of thing… of course it never ever was.

I am a proud child of two WW2 veterans. My mother was a Wave and my dad was a Seabee. They were both from the same small town and didn't meet until after the war. My mother was probably a typist in Navy intelligence but I say "probably" because she would never talk about what she did. She was sworn to secrecy and took it to her grave. Dad spoke very little about it. The greatest generation.

The narrator is claiming the Japanese Navy attacked the battleships in Pearl Harbor instead of going for the aircraft carriers, which is misleading. The carriers were the most highly prized of the ships to be bombed and torpedoed, but all the carriers were out on training cruises on December 7, 1941. The battleships were still capital ships at the time so blowing them up was still a huge victory for Japan. Just not as big as the Japs had thought it was.... Why does this channel have several episodes with the same number? For instance, I've watched a few Episode # 1's here. Sometimes the video will show the war in Europe, still with "Episode # 1". or "Episode # 2", etc., I've gone to the channel but the list is as messed up as the list is.... at least it's entertaining.

Hitlers decisions lost them the war. Plus him trusting some Generals that talked him out of the original Operation Barbarossa, where they first would have captured Murmansk and oil fields and then starved the Russians to their death. Capturing Murmansk, would have stopped aid from USA coming to Russia...without that aid, Russia would not have survived the first winter. Generals wanted to capture Moscow and win the war that way, almost worked, Stalin was ready to surrender but then Hitler halted the assault on Moscow and sent the tanks south, that decision most likely lost them the war. As Stalin was in total panic, no defensive lines around Moscow, no army left to protect Moscow. When Hitler halted the assault, That gave Stalin time to calm down, get defensive lines dug, and the army from Siberia to come to their aid and set up positions but even then that wouldn't have been enough, without the Mud season and Winter starting. General Mud saved Moscow and Russia from defeat. Another stupid decision was the first jet fighter planes, they were placed into mass production in 1942 behind Hitlers back, when Hitler found out about it, he went into a rage and stopped the mass production, he said he is the one that makes the decision not the luftwaffe. When the planes was finally allowed into mass production late 1944, no changes was made to them from the ones in 1942 and in the air they were superior. Only during takeoff and landing where they easy to take out. That decision most likely lost them the war. If they had thousands of jetfighters up the air, in 1943 the allies would have suffered heavy losses in the air and never got the upper hand and not done the long range bombing runs into Germany. Many other decisions made that caused heavy losses to Germany by Hitler. But these 2 decisions lost them the war, either one decision not made, and Germany might have won in the end. Both not made and they would have won the war.

Riveting account. Joe McGraw's account of his attack on the 18 Vals, told to me in person, differed in some details from the account herein. His 4 plane flight, depicted in a painting Joe made, made a near simultaneous beam attack on the VAls, (I would have sworn they were Kates) with each fighter taking out a bomber before the escort could intervene. As the Zeros attacked, Joe turned into them and shot down the leader's wingman. Joe and the Zero leader then turned into each other for a head on pass. Joe said that was the tightest he ever turned the FM-2 and put some rounds into the Zero's engine. The last Joe saw, the Zero was diving away with its engine smoking. He said the Zero leader was a real pro but who had probably not seen a Wildcat since Guadalcanal. He likely did not expect the improved performance of the FM-2. In later years, Joe tried to find the identity of the Zero leader but the last I heard, he had no luck. Joe ended the war with 5 kills and a probable (the Zero leader was unconfirmed).
